Dear Families,
Welcome back to school! The 2011-2012 year promises to be an eventful and exciting one! Next Wednesday, August 17, will be a minimum day. School will be out at 12. Back to school night for 4th and 5th grades will be that evening at 6:30 PM. I am looking forward to meeting all parents and going over the year's expectations. Here's to an amazing year! At last we are in the last week of the school year. I can hardly believe my students are practically fifth graders. It has been quite a year. I thank you for sharing your child with me this year. Dear Families,
We are down to the last full  month of the school year! Wow, has it flown by.  The first week of May, we are finishing up CST testing. We began a unit in social studies on "The Gold Rush" and a unit in science on "Rocks and Minerals." We will have homework in each of those subjects twice a week until the last week of school.  Progress reports went home May 2. Please sign and return promptly. Students can check in with me weekly on their social studies and science grades since these were not posted on the progress reports. Following, are some important dates for the rest of the year:
Last day to make AR goal: May 25    AR party: June 1
Last awards assemby: June 1, 10:15 AM 
Minimum days: May 13, May 27, June 2             No School: May30
Last day of school: June 2. Report cards will go home on this day.

Dear Families,
Happy April! We are now in the final trimester of the year. Friday, April 1, is our Heritage Tour. You will need to sign a permission slip for this if you haven't already. We will look at the early historty of our local area on this trip.  Friday, April 8 and Friday, April 22 are minimum days. School will let out at 12:00.  CST testing begins on Tuesday (for fourth grade) April 26 and will continue through Tuesday, May 3. The next few weeks will be spent reviewing critical skills for these very important exams. Please do your best to make sure your child is present, and not tardy during this time period. We have started our muliplication "mad minutes" in class.  The week of April 4 we will be on the 4's. The week of April 11 we will be on the 5's. The week of April 18, we will be on the 6's.  Each week we will advance to the next level. Students should be practicing at home daily and must pass the quiz in one minute or less on the Friday of each week.  Look into flashcards if you don't have any! Have a wonderul Spring!! Happy March Families!
Friday, March 4, is a minimum day. School will be out at 12:00. Spring break begins on Monday, March 14. School will resume on Monday, March 28. I hope the two weeks off will be restful and pleasant for everyone! Report cards will be sent home on Friday, March 11. Keep the report card, but send the envelope signed back to school. When we return the third trimester of the year will begin. That Friday, April 1, we will be taking our Heritage Tour of the local area. More information will be sent home for this later. For enrichment, we say goodbye to Mrs. Long, and hello to Mrs. Lloyd, the art teacher. The next few weeks will be important ones, as we begin review of vital concepts. This month we have Monday, Feb. 21st off for President's Day. Progress reports were sent home. They must be signed and returned. Please contact me if you any questions regarding these reports. The end of trimester 2 is  just a few short weeks away! On Wednesday, February 23, all fourth graders will be taking an important exam, the NAEP. Please make sure your child is not tardy on this day. This exam gives us important information. On February 15 and 16 all students will be taking the common assessments for math and language arts. Monday, February 14 will be our Valentine's Day party. Please see and sign the note for this as well.  During the first week of March, fourth graders will take the state writing exam as well. We are working hard in writing to prepare for this. Dear Families,                    January 2011
Happy New Year! It is good to be back! As a reminder, there is no school Monday, Jan. 17 and Monday, Jan.  31.   We will be taking our class group photo on Friday,  Jan. 21.  One book order will go home on Jan. 18.  Please remember library day is each Monday. We have quite a few overdue books.  Students should be taking at least one AR test a week in order to make their new goals for the second trimester. A progress report will be going home at the end of January to give you your child's current progress thus far. We will be having a science test on Friday, Jan. 21. The following week, Jan 24, we will begin a new unit in Social Studies. Stay warm!!

Happy December! Trimester 1 is officially over, and we are into the next trimester. Dec. 10 is the AR party for those that made their goals in trimester 1.  A multiple book order has been sent home for students to order for holiday reading, our classroom book exchange, or for parents wishing to buy books as  holiday gifts.   The book fair will also be here the second week of December and it's the "Buy one, get one Free!" This is a great way to get a book and get another free for our book exchange. Friday, December 17, is the last day of school in 2010. On this day the fourth grade will hold its annual "Christmas Around the World" event. Please send back the green information sheet I gave out during parent teacher conferences if you have not already done so. I really need volunteers and the donations will be most appreciated. School will resume on Monday, January 10, 2011.

Happy November! The first trimester is nearly over. The last day for students to take an AR test is on Nov. 10. There will be no school on Nov. 11 and 12.  The week of Nov. 15-19 will be minimum days for parent/teacher conferences. Notices will be sent home to confirm dates and times for these. Friday, Nov. 19 we will be taking a field trip to Crafton Hills College to participate in 'Native American Days.' We are currently studying Native Americans for social studies. The week of Nov. 22-26 will be Thanksgiving break. School will then resume on a regular schedule on Monday, Nov. 29.  November will be a busy, quick  month!  Our first awards  assembly will take place the first week of December , as well as the AR party for those that made their goal. Students, on average, should be earning at least 1 point a week in AR. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday-many blessings to all Mentone families!

Dear Family,
Happy September!! What a nice change of weather. This week, we start the "Lefty's Reading Challenge." Your child has a score card here at school and the goal is to get all 20 cars stamped by me, by Sept. 30. I will stamp a car each day they turn in a reading log or  take an AR test and pass it with a score of 80% or better. We got our new agendas last week! Please make it a habit to check your child's agenda at least several times a week, if not daily, to see what homework there is . Also, help your child keep their backpacks and binders clean and organized. All students should now have a pocket folder in a binder with stickers (that I provide) labeling each pocket. This week we will review for our first social studies test which will be next Tuesday, Sept. 14.

Dear Family.
Are you ready for a HOT week?? Please make sure your child has a water bottle this week. I am  checking off which students now have 1. a binder, 2. a pencil sharpener, 3. a pocket folder and 4. a pencil box. These items really will help with organization and saving time. If you did not attend Back to School night last Thursday please look for the parent information packet and fill out and return the last 2 sheets. I would like these as soon as possible. This week, we began out rotations among myself, Mrs. Mariani, and Miss Ludington. The students seemed excited and I am looking forward to getting know three groups of students and not just my own. Dear Family,
This week we are completing the district assessments. There is no spelling due to this. We went over the last few items of the CA report and the entire report is due this Friday, May 28. We will be very busy with many events so all students need to return last week's and this week's Week in a Peek so I know you are aware of all school events. A note was sent home about our annual "Pioneer Day." We need volunteers to make all events run smoothly so please make sure to see this sheet and sign up if you can! Week of May 17-21, 2010

Dear Family,
This Friday oral book reports are due and will be shared. No reading log is due, but students should continue reading as June 4 is the last day to make the AR goal and that is not too far off! We continue to work on the CA report everyday. These are due May 28. Students should be working on this daily at home if they do not finish the day's work at school. Chapter 9 math test is this Friday so we are reviewing all week. Next week, we will work on the district assessments for the third trimestr. We have to work hard to get much done in these last three weeks. I am hopeful students will push hard to end the year out on a strong note. Have a great week!

Dear Family,
We are done with state testing in fourth grade. Students did a great job of working quietly through all four days. Our year is winding down quite quickly. Next week, oral book reports will be shared on Friday, May 21. How is your child doing in AR?? Reports go home on Fridays with everything else. We will be working on the CA report everyday for the next two weeks. These are due May 28. This Friday is our chapter 8 test in math-we are reviewing for it this week. Week of  May 3-7, 2010
Dear Family,
This Tuesday through Friday we will be taking the CSTs. It is very important that your child is here on time and ready to test. Please make sure they get a good  night's rest and eat a good breakfast. Homework will be minimal this week. Students need to find a new chapter book for the last book report just assigned. Directions for this will go home this week as well as for our CA report. A letter went home on Monday about making our goal for Catalina. Those that paid will be going! Others that change their mind can still pay and attend as well. Good luck to all students this week!

Week of April 19-23
Dear Family,
This Thursday is our trip to Oak Glen. I will be sending home a note Wednesday about what to wear and what to bring. Remember we will return about 3:00 PM. State testing begins the week of May 3. A very important letter about the CSTs will be going home this Friday. We are working hard in math learning new concepts and reviewing previously learned ones. We will not have science for a few weeks until the CSTs are over. There will be no Social studies for two weeks as well, so that next week we can work on lots of review.  Next Friday, we will be going on our Heritage Tour field trip. I will send home information on this Friday as well.

Week of April 12-16, 2010

Dear Family,
The week's are winding down before state testing begins. We are spending much time reviewing many previously learned concepts in class. Testing begins the first week of May. In math, we are reviewing for our chapter 7 test which will take place on Wednesday. Students continue to take their weekly timed multiplication quiz as well. Last Friday's quiz went home for you to view so you can work on this with your child if they still aren't finishing it. This week will be our last week of science until after state testing. In Social studies we are having a good time learning about the CA gold rush. This week we are writing about it and creating "Wanted" posters of ourselves! A permission slip for our April 22 trip to Los Rios Ranch went home on Friday. This is due, with a $10 donation, this week. All payments for Catalina are due this Friday, ($250) for those that are interested in having their students attend the trip.

Dear Family,
This week we are working on district assessments so there is no spelling. Mission reports and projects are due Wed. the 17th. This Friday is our trip to the U of R to see the symphony perform. Permission slips were sent home on Friday. No reading log went home either. Students can begin reading their biographies if they wish. We have just a few weeks left in the trimester so please encourage your child to finish out strongly! March 12 is the end of the trimester.

Happy February! Today progress reports went home. Please keep the white copy and send the green one back signed. Please contact myself or Mrs. Mariani should you have any questions regarding any of the grades. Grades can easily be turned around. Today I sent home a notice about our Dec. 18, Christmas Around the World Celebration. Please return this as soon as possible. Thank you to those of you who sold candles in support of our fundraiser. Candles should be in next week. This Thursday is our awards assembly for the first trimester. Your child received a notice if they are getting an award. In math we continue in long division and the 11's in multiplication. In writing we are working on a holiday letter this week. Reading logs are due Friday. Dear Family, 
This week we have minimum days every day due to parent conferences. Please be prompt for these. If you are late your conference may be short or have to be rescheduled. My schedule is tight with only 20 minutes per conference scheduled. This Friday is our field trip to Crafton Hills College to participate in Native American Day. The permission slip need  to be filled out and a sack lunch will be needed. I am looking for parent volunteers as well. There will be no spelling or science this week. Thursday is our final test for chapter 4 in math so we will review all week. No reading log will be sent home either as students should be working on their final tribe reports and projects. Dear Family,
This Thursday is our parent meeting regarding your child's science camp trip for next year. It is very important you attend to understand why we must work so hard in fourth grade to raise the funds. T-shirt sales end this Friday! Money raised from t-shirts benefits fourth grade! We will be selling candles in November for fourth grade trips as well. Halloween grams go on sale Tuesday to help raise funds too. The penny drive continues to go on for us as well. All these efforts just for fourth grade! Have a great week!

Dear Family,
 This week, in math, we are on the 7's in multiplication and are getting into long division. You can help by checking your child's math homework for accuracy as lots of students seem to be struggling with this concept. In spelling, we are working on the OU and OW sounds. In writing, we are rewriting the middle and end of our old "Box" stories. Students are learning the techniques to improve the detail in their writing. Students have a reading log due Friday. Please ask them how they're doing in the AR program. Are they meeting the goal or close to it? We will complete lesson 5 in social studies, "CA communities." Dear Family,
This Thursday is our annual Resource Fair! I hope to see everyone there! It will be lots of fun and our booths will raise money for science camp. TWO t-shirt order forms went home today. Both sales benefit fourth grade so buy some shirts and/or sweatshirts to help support fourth grade! The yellow form is an anniversary shirt (60 years!) The purple form is for our colt design shirt. Progress reports went home Friday. They are due back signed right away. In reading, we have a log due Friday. Students have until Nov. 13 to make their AR goal. In math we have started chapter 3, multiplication. We take our final test on the 6's this Friday. In social studies we are on lesson 4, "Landforms and Settlement." Dear Family,
This week we continue to work in chapter 2 in math, addition and subtraction. We will have a quiz on Friday. Our final test on the 5's in mult. is next Tues., Sept. 29. In reading, all students have a reading log due Friday. I expect to see them reading their book report books. Book reports are due Oct. 2! In social studies we have a map of CA regions and borders quiz on Friday. Students have colored/filled in the map and need to study it. In writing, we continue with the development of a fictional narrative. We have completed two so far and now will go back to focus, this week, on story beginnings. Science with Mrs. Mariani is on Wed. and Thurs. Library is on Wed. Music with Mrs. Long is on Tues. and Friday. SOME students earned free time with Mrs. Cavanagh this Thursday for good behavior all month long (no citiations, good homework habits, etc.) A note will go home if your child qualifies.  Fundraising forms and money due Sept. 22!

This week we begin chapter 2 in math, addition and subtraction of whole numbers. We will take our final test on the 4's in multiplication on Thursday. A reading log is due Friday. A book report form was sent home. All forms are due October 2. In social studies we are on lesson 3, CA regions. In writing we are working on our first story, a fictional narrative. Students have a science assignment due to Mrs. Mariani this Wednesday. I hope students are working hard at  the fundraiser-funds rasied by fourth graders will go towards science camp for fifth grade.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable holiday weekend. This week we prepare for our first chapter math test. The test is on Thursday. We are on the 4's in multiplication. In reading, we have split into reading groups depending on student reading levels. Some students will go to Mrs. DeDoes, Mrs. Mariani or myself from 10:05 to 11:05 for reading instruction. In social studies, we continue in lesson 2, "How is Earth Divided." Lesson 1 tests go home this Friday. In writing, we continue with paragraph development. We will have science and music two days this week.

Dear Family,
I was out Monday due to my son being sick. This week promises to be busy! In reading, we will read a story about the Titanic and complete related worksheets. Our reading logs are due Friday. Ask your child about their goals in AR. You should be getting their test prinouts on Friday. In writing we will be writing a paragraph everyday. We are working to improve in quality and being more descriptive. In spelling, we will take a test on Friday. Last week's test will be sent home THIS Friday. Students need to master the concept of ABC order this week. In Social Studies we have to turn in lesson 1 and we will begin lesson 2," How is Earth Divided?" We will have Science with Mrs. Mariani on Wed. and Thurs. and music with Mrs. Long on Tues. and Friday.  This Friday a new Week-in-a-Peek will be going home. Dear Family,
 Last Friday, Aug.21, the first weekly note "Week in a Peek" went home. I hope you all saw it and signed it if your child had any missing work. Students MUST return these to me. This week in math we continue in chapter one with numbers up through the millions. In spelling we are focusing on the short and long E sound. In Social Studies, we continue in Unit 1, working with lattiude, longitude and maps. In writing, we will work on paragraphs. In reading we are reading the story, "Grandfather's Journey" and will complete related pages. Our first reading log went home today and it is due Friday. We practiced filling them out together last week. Finally, we will  have science 2 days this week with Mrs. Mariani. We will also have music two days this week with Mrs. Long. Dear Family,
We had a great first week and are ready to get started on regular schedule.
Thank you to those that came to Back to School Night and for those that have donated items to our classroom. Remember to fill out and return the last page of the parent packet. In math we started chapter one and are working on place value. Our first math quiz, spelling test, and reading quiz is this Friday. In writing we are working on improving sentences. We will start science this week with Mrs. Mariani. In reading, we are reading the story "Akiak" out of our reading books. We got our first spelling list and will have spelling homework every night this week. We will have one social studies assignment this week. We are focusing on latitude and logitude. Dear Family,
Welcome back to School! I hope everyone had an enjoyable and restful summer break. I am so excited for the new school year to begin! Fourth graders are fabulous! Wednesday is a minimum day with Back to School Night for grades 1-3. Thursday night at 6:30 PM, is Back to School Night for fourth and fifth grades. I hope to meet all families and share what to expect this year in fourth grade. This first week, we will be getting to know one another and learning a new routine. Please work on getting the items on the list of "Required Classroom Items." These things will help in the area of organization tremedlously- a big asset in fourth grade! Dear Family,
Well, our last week of fourth grade is upon us! It is amazing how fast the time has gone by! I will miss all my wonderful fourth graders. Here's what's going on this week.
Monday: AR party 1:30 PM
Tuesday: Field Day! You might get wet! Bring in a cake if you can for the cake walk!
Wednesday: Life Saver Day. Bring in a roll of this candy. 1:00 Awards Assembly.
Thursday: Last Day!! Minimum Day; 12:00 dismissal. Report cards go home on this day. See note sent home for donations being requested for our party.
